Before you spend money on any new valve, faucet, or shower system, grab a cheap pressure gauge from a hardware store, screw it onto an outdoor spigot, and read the actual number. Or you can simply time how long it takes to fill a one-gallon bucket from the showerhead. Divide 60 by the seconds it took. If your shower fills a bucket in 30 seconds, you have 2 gallons per minute. If it takes 15 seconds, you have 4 gallons per minute. This bucket test tells you the real flow at the point of use, which matters more than the pressure at the main line because elbows, old galvanized pipes, and a restrictive shower arm all eat into that number.
Compare the two readings. A big difference means your internal plumbing is the bottleneck, not the city supply. That changed my whole approach. I stopped looking at showerheads and started checking the angle stops and the flexible supply lines. Replacing a corroded shutoff valve gave me more flow than any new head ever did.
What your numbers mean for the bathroom you can build
Pressure below 40 psi is common in older homes. Once you know your numbers, you can shop with a clear head. If your pressure sits in the normal range, you can spend on finish and style without worrying.
